The battle at Malvern Hill on July 1st 1862 was the culmination of the 7 Days battle and the end of the Peninsula Campaign. McClellan claimed the high ground and set up a brilliant position on a plateau called Malvern hill. With forests on one side and swamp on the other the Confederates were forced to attack across the open fields against massed artillery. The ranks of the Confederate soldiers were shattered. Faulty intelligence led General McClellan to suspect large Confederate reserves nearby that did not exist. He being the cautious Field General he was, he chose to withdraw, saving Richmond and possibly ending the war. Malvern Hill is an extremely well preserved battlefield in a quiet field outside Richmond.
