The battle of Cold Harbor was one of the bloodiest battles in the 1864 Overland Campaign and the fourth major battle of Lee vs Grant. Grant was racing south to Richmond trying to force his way in. After side stepping Lee's Army of Northern Virginia after nearly being annihilated at North Anna, Grant underestimated Lee's resolve at Hold Harbor and tried to take Lee's army at a well dug in position. The maneuver failed and Grant once again sidestepped Lee and disappeared in the night only to make a lightening dash to Petersburg where a nearly year siege finally broke the Confederate lines to Richmond.
