Moissanite is a common simulant and alternative used in the jewelry market for diamond. On the surface, it is marketed as a better option because of its supposedly better fire and lower prices. Sometimes, these are also called moissanite fake diamonds

To the untrained eye, it is difficult to know if a diamond is real if you do not understand the properties of diamond and moissanite. The difference between moissanite and diamond lies in their refractive properties and moissanite is doubly refractive which causes it to bend light more than diamond.

In this video, I attempted to use a diamond tester on both moissanite and diamond. As you will see, moissanite tests as a false positive on the testing device because it has similar heat conductive properties like a diamond. Hence, you cannot rely on such a tester to differentiate a diamond and moissanite apart.

Using a loupe, you can learn how to tell a real diamond from moissanite by inspecting the facets for a doubling effect. Diamond does not display this phenomenon.

Alternatively, you can also buy a more complex diamond tester that also has an imbued electrical conductivity test. The Presidium brand of diamond testers have this function and can identify a diamond from a moissanite. Due to its covalent bonding structure, diamond does not conduct electricity. On the other hand, moissanite can conduct electricity.

For a more professional level of testing to differentiate between diamonds and common gemstones, I recommend the Presidium gemstone tester which will cost upwards of $100 depending on model and functionality. This higher end gemstone tester has an in-built test for electrical conductivity which allows it to detect moissanite and diamond accurately.
