Instrumentation by Mamoru Ogata. It was about time I begun showcasing the rich musical traditions of Japan on this channel, and the Epic Japanese series will endeavour to use the sounds of modern traditional Japanese music as a framing device to explore the mythology and history of the island-nation. In this case, I wanted to post a piece of music that has a thematic relevance to the Mogami clan, a feudal clan of the Sengoku period who ruled over territories now found in modern Yamagata as daimyōs.
The song is Hanagasa Ondo, a traditional dance and sung piece from the Yamagata region of Japan, often played during a summer festival native to the area. The instruments heard here are the shamisen, koto and shakuhachi, and were performed by Mamoru Ogata. The drums consist of the traditional Japanese taiko drums.
