Our excursion in Hiroshima first visited the famous floating Tori gate on Miyajima Island. With semi wild deer and places to eat and shop plus the Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima Island is a popular destination and you could easily spend the day. We bought some Japanese sweets to try. To visit, it's a short ferry ride to the island. We then visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a park dedicated to the victims of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in August, 1945. It contains several statues and memorials to the people of Hiroshima and the remnants of the one building that was left standing after the blast, The Atomic Bomb Dome. While it's a beautiful park, it is somber to visit and learn about the people. We went inside the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Museum, with is a hard-hitting, honest look at what happens to a city and its people when an atomic bomb is dropped.
