In this live webcast from July 16, 2026, MIT’s very own Ben Taylor SM'25 presents on the biomechanics of the golf swing. Ben wrote his MIT thesis on: “Biomechanical Golf Swing Analysis using Markerless Three-Dimensional Skeletal Tracking through Truncation-Robust Heatmaps” as part of his master’s in System Design and Management (SDM). The 3D body pose estimation is particularly cutting edge, extracting requisite body joint and element data from standard smartphone or YouTube video.
The webinar includes plenty of analytic outputs and findings, but also biomechanical assessment of current and past professional golfers. His research explored swing rotation (the kinematic sequence) of a variety of golfer archetypes: classic swings like Adam Scott and Nelly Korda, abbreviated back swings like Rahm and Finau, power hitters like McIlroy and DeChambeau, and unconventional swings like Furyk and Matt Wolff. Additionally, Ben quantitatively analysed how Tiger Woods’ swing evolved and changed over two decades – from his amateur years through his comeback culminating in his latest Masters victory. In addition, Ben discusses the future potential of biomechanical swing analysis in the current landscape of instructional tools and apps.

Ben holds an M.S. in Engineering & Management from MIT, a Master’s in Engineering Management from Duke University, and a B.S. in Ocean Engineering from the US Naval Academy. Following a career in the Navy, he now works as a Senior Principal Systems Engineer at Raytheon. Unsurprisingly, Ben is an avid golfer.
