The Governor has told GBC less that one percent of the diplomatic effort in negotiations towards the Gibraltar EU Treaty involved arrangements on the Naval Base or military facilities.
Lieutenant General Sir Ben Bathurst says he is entirely satisfied that the arrangements on free movement in the Treaty will have no impact on military operations in Gibraltar, and this is something Spain has agreed to.
Sir Ben said it is therefore not true to suggest that the UK’s principal interest in Gibraltar was the naval base.
In a feature length interview with GBC News, which will air in three parts on the evening television bulletins, Jonathan Sacramento first asked him about whether he thought there were any sovereignty implications in joint checks by Gibraltar and Spanish authorities at the airport.
