In this video, we’re going to answer as many of your questions as we can about the materials and set up that we’re using for our micro green trials.

Seeds
We’re getting our seeds from Johnny Seeds. Microgreen seeds range from $10-300 dollars per pound, but the common crops are $20-40 per pound
Media
We’ve been using hemp media to grow our greens because they’re clean, easy to move out of the tray if we need, and they’re one continuous piece of media, which makes it easy to harvest with and electric knife.
Trays
We use mesh-bottom 10X20 inch trays. These are easy to store and easy to irrigate from below in our flood system. The only downside is that they are deep, so we have to remove the media from the tray to harvest. Some people have suggested using shallower trays, which is a possibility.
Irrigation
We irrigate our seedling/microgreen cart twice a day on a timer, but people in warmer environments might want to do this three times a day.
Pump
We’re using a 550 Active Aqua Submersible pump. If you’re running a system close to our size, you’ll probably need a pump anywhere from 400-550 GPH.
Seedling Cart XL with flood trays
The seedling cart we’re using is a commercial grade system that we use both for microgreens and seedling.
Under the shelves, there is a small sump tank where our pump is located. It pumps water from the sump to the top flood tray with a length of 1/2” poly tubing. The water floods the top tray, which is set up with L-fittings to create siphons. The water siphons down tray by tray, flooding each and draining until it reached the bottom.w
The inside of the flood trays is indented upward to keep the water from reaching the top of the 10X20 in growing trays. There’s a slight slope to the tray to make sure it drains the right side of the tray for siphoning.
Propagation chamber
Before putting our microgreen seedlings into the flood system, you need to get them to germinate. Since most micro green setups have an open face, they need an environment with high humidity and warmth. We use a run-of-the-mill prop chamber. This has a heating element and water in the bottom.
