From the archives: This video is from an interview and 2008 talk that Michael Pollan gave at the Bagdad Theatre in Portland, Oregon. Pollan explains the history of modern nutrition and how the nutrition experts got it wrong.

What he says then is still relevant today. Pollan is speaking directly about "nutritionism", food science, which he believes holds a loftier perch in society than it deserves.

In many respects, Pollan argues, culture has more to teach us than food scientists. We still do not understand what exactly is in a carrot and how to synthesize its essence. And so what, Pollan explains, as long we know that eating a fresh carrot is tastes good and is healthy to eat.
