In this video, C. Vision Productions visits the Ferrocarril Mexicano del Pacífico, which was the last exclusively steam-powered freight railway in Mexico. Videographer Dan Hadley visited this fascinating operation in 1990, at a time when steam was still the preferred power on the M del P. We’ll begin with a cab ride aboard M del P’s Baldwin 2-8-2 number 4, as the crew departs Los Mochis for the three-mile run over to the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico interchange. Upon arrival at the interchange, a little switching is performed before turning back. On the return trip, we’ll pace along with the train, and bring you trackside views to wrap up the chase. After the round trip is completed, we find locomotives 6 and 7 resting at the Los Mochis engine house. Steam operation finally ended for good in the mid-1990s, but not all was lost. Locomotives 2, 4, 6, and 7 have survived, and can now be found at various locations in Los Mochis. M del P’s existence was tied to the sugarcane processing mill in Los Mochis, which has since closed. Of course, the railroad is gone too.
