In this video, photographer Fred Crissey follows trains on the Chicago & North Western’s “Alco Line” between Winona, Minnesota and Pierre, South Dakota, from 1977 to 1981. Also included are the Plainview, Minnesota and James Valley Junction to Oakes, North Dakota branch lines. This program features Alco locomotive models RS-3, RSD-4, RSD-5, RS-11, RS-32, and C425, along with EMD models GP7, GP9, SD7R, and SD9. Notable locations featured include Winona, Stockton Hill, Rochester, Dodge Center, Owatonna, Waseca, Mankato, New Ulm, Lake Benton, Arlington, Huron, Aberdeen, and Pierre. Fred also visits many of the smaller communities along the route, in addition to numerous scenes captured in the wide open prairie and farmland of Minnesota and South Dakota.
