Going from gene to protein involves transcription to pre-mRNA, splicing to mature mRNA, and translation to protein. Each of these events has potential to be targeted (sometimes in multiple ways) in both the lab and the clinic.

Gene level
- Gene editing (e.g. w/CRISPR/Cas): A guide RNA is used to direct destructive or modifying machinery (Cas protein) to a specific DNA.

pre-mRNA level:
- Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs): Short, chemically-modified, nucleic acids bind to pre-mRNA to alter its processing (splicing, etc.)

mRNA level:
- ASOs bind mRNA to block its usage or trigger its destruction by RNase H.
- RNAi (e.g. with siRNA or shRNA): A guide RNA (from siRNA, is used to direct RNA destruction machinery (Ago) to a specific mRNA.

Protein level:
- PROTACS & molecular glues get proteins tagged proteins for degradation
- Antibodies & aptamers block binding
- Small molecule inhibitors block activity

Genetic information can also through gene therapy with DNA delivered via viral vectors or mRNA delivered in lipid nanoparticles.
