A rare fireball was captured descending behind Mayon Volcano in the Philippines on May 25, 2026 at 10:33 PM local time, creating a dramatic scene over one of the world’s most iconic active volcanoes.
At first, PHIVOLCS believed the meteor may have struck Mayon after cameras recorded the bright object falling over the volcano’s slopes. After reviewing seismic, infrasound, and video data, PHIVOLCS later determined that the object disintegrated in the atmosphere before reaching the ground.
Meteors are caused when small space rocks, called meteoroids, enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and burn up. When they become especially bright, they are often called fireballs. Most meteoroids never reach the surface; only fragments that survive the atmosphere and land on Earth are called meteorites. NASA describes meteors as the bright streaks produced when meteoroids enter the atmosphere, while the American Meteor Society defines fireballs as unusually bright meteors, often brighter than Venus.
This footage is even more remarkable because it happened over Mayon Volcano, the most active volcano in the Philippines. Mayon is famous for its near-perfect cone shape and its long history of eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, and lahars. The current Mayon eruption began in January 2026, with PHIVOLCS raising the volcano to Alert Level 3 as lava, rockfalls, volcanic earthquakes, and pyroclastic flows continued. NASA notes that Mayon has erupted many times through recorded and geologic history, including deadly eruptions in 1814, 1897, and 1993.
On this night, a cosmic fireball and an erupting volcano appeared in the same frame — a rare meeting of space and Earth’s deep interior.
