NASA coverage begins at 7:00 a.m. EDT / 4:00 a.m. PDT, with the spacewalk scheduled to begin at approximately 8:35 a.m. EDT / 5:35 a.m. PDT. The EVA is expected to last about six hours and 40 minutes.
During the spacewalk, Williams and Meir will replace a malfunctioning wrist joint on Canadarm2, the Canadian-built robotic arm that has been part of the ISS since April 26, 2001. Canadarm2 plays a critical role in station maintenance, visiting spacecraft operations, and moving astronauts and equipment around the exterior of the orbiting laboratory.
This will be the astronauts’ second spacewalk together. NASA astronauts Jack Hathaway and ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot will assist from inside the station, helping with spacesuit operations and carefully positioning Canadarm2 for repair access.
Spacewalks, also known as EVAs — extravehicular activities — are among the most complex operations performed in orbit. Astronauts work outside the space station while traveling around Earth at roughly 28,000 km/h, repairing and upgrading one of humanity’s most important orbiting laboratories.
