A newly formed crack opens inside Kīlauea Volcano’s Halemaʻumaʻu crater, captured from both Camera A and Camera B.
The feature appeared in the early morning of July 30, 2026, shortly after the end of Kīlauea’s Episode 52 eruption. The new fissure formed slightly upslope of the existing south vent, exposing intensely hot material beneath the surface.
In the days following its formation, the crack continued to show areas of incandescence and volcanic gas emissions. USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory observations have also noted changes in activity around the fissure during gas-piston and tremor events associated with Kīlauea’s existing summit vents.
This video shows the moment the crack develops from two different camera angles, providing a rare look at changes occurring within Kīlauea’s active summit vent system.
At this time, the feature should not be confused with a new eruption along Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone. It is located within the ongoing summit eruption area inside Halemaʻumaʻu.
Kīlauea’s current summit eruption began on December 23, 2024, and has continued through a remarkable sequence of episodic lava-fountaining events.
