METANOIA is a hand-drawn animated short film by Austrian artist and filmmaker Astrid Rothaug, exploring perspective, uncertainty, and the strange ways we try to make sense of the world around us.
Guided through magical forests in search of the perfect colorful vision of life, our narrator turns to a magic squirrel to transform her worldview. But seeing the world in black and white or through rose-colored glasses, may only create new problems.
Astrid created METANOIA while studying painting as an ERASMUS student at FBAUL in Lisbon, Portugal. Inspired by the experience of living abroad and encountering people with vastly different perspectives, she built the film like a visual poem: dreamy, fluid, and open to unpredictability.
The animation was hand-drawn in Procreate and draws from Astrid’s background in painting, drawing, printmaking, cut-outs, and experimental animation. Sound design, original music, and final mix by Ken Rischard.
