After I've shown the opening, time to move on with the actual playthrough!

You start out being able to choose from Easy, Normal, or Hard in the US version of this game. This affect things such as player and enemy health, damage given and taken, and how much ammo you can keep for each weapon and the amount of Rations you can have. It also affects how well the enemy can hear noise, among other things.

I'm starting out on Normal. To unlock Extreme, beat the game.
----------

Continuing on from the game's Opening, Solid Snake has swam himself into the massive base of Shadow Moses Island. Starting at the Dock.

On the opposite side of the area he starts out in, the leader of the new terrorist FOX-HOUND, Liquid Snake, had just taken a elevator upward. Snake will have to reach that elevator to continue on.

Past the transmitters of the previous games, Snake now uses a program called a CODEC to communicate to his staff of operations, including his commander from the Zanzibar Land mission, Colonel Roy Campbell. His Frequency is once against 140.85.
----------

Solid 1's gameplay is basically a 3D evolution of Metal Gear 2's gameplay, and after finally playing through that game, I see there is a very AGGRESSIVE amount of similarities between both of them, gameplay- AND story-wise.

Rations are now back to being one type. The O2 gauge is still around for underwater and gassed areas, and Snake once again starts his mission out with his favorite cigarettes (more about HOW he brought those with him in Part 2).

The radar mostly works just like it did in Metal Gear 2, but now enemies have a field of vision. When its blue, they're patroling, but when it goes red, it means they've noticed something, like any noise they've heard, or they just outright found you.

The Alert will go off AS SOON as the enemy has a red "!" over their head. It doesn't matter if you've hit or choked them within the split second between them noticing you and the radar going into Alert Time.

More enemies can spawn from offscreen, even if that wasn't how many were partrolling the area beforehand. Fight, run and hide!

The dive into water will only work during Alert or Evasion Time. Kinda cool to see, but you're only gonna see it in this starting area.
----------

Since Liquid already took the elevator, to move on, you just have to wait for the elevator to come back. It will have an enemy coming with it, so just do something about that and take the elevator.
----------

Once Snake rides the elevator, he takes off the rest of his scuba diving gear, revealing his entire face and his brand new Sneaking Suit.

Now... Metal Gear Solid can truly begin...
