Meroë was one of the capital cities of the Kushite Kingdom. The Kushite rule in Egypt (the 25th Dynasty) was responsible for a revival of a lot of Egyptian culture in religion, art and architecture - including a new phase of pyramid building that hadn't been seen for thousands of years!
