Felix Mendelssohn wrote 8 volumes of Songs Without Words, most of which were written for the piano. The opus 109 Song Without Words was written in 1845, two years before his death, and follows the tradition of the lyrical expressivity of his works of a similar name for piano. Of the songs without words in general, Mendelssohn wrote “What the music I love expresses to me, is not thought too indefinite to put into words, but on the contrary, too definite”.
