Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel is one of Schubert's most beautiful Lieder. It is about Gretchen's love for Faust, which causes her agitation and loss of peace, but pervades her mind utterly. Schubert wrote it when he was just 16. It sets a poem from the Damnation of Faust, by Goethe. The piano mimics the rapid spinning of the wheel as Gretchen spins and sings. She sings of her love for Faust and her loss of peace, and of his kisses and her attraction to him. She sings "My peace is gone, My heart is heavy, I shall never ever find peace again".
