Schumann wrote Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano in 1849, a particularly good year for him, in which he composed over 20 works. The adagio is a gloriously intimate conversation between the two instruments, first in back and forth phrases and then sometimes with interruptions, finally subsiding in a deep calm. This is abruptly interrupted by the Allegro, with a forceful energetic eruption of music. This proceeds nonstop almost from start to finish, with only a brief reprieve in the middle.
