To spoil things a little here for you, dear comment reader, I propose that for people who sincerely believe they are communing with those in the great beyond, it's a matter of a cognitive attribution error for where those "messages" are coming from. Some are probably scammers, but I have to believe that isn't the case for everyone. That some people aren't trying to get a leg up on their fellow peeps.
