No, the colour scheme chosen isn't some carefully coded message. It's a common pattern, and with white commonly being perceived as difficult to paint, it seemed a good choice to tackle something this large with a relatively simple method that's easy to replicate at home.

The best thing about the early medieval period is that during the early 13th Century, rules around heraldry weren't yet codified, and there was a lot of leeway in what anything would mean or relate to. Simple geometric shapes and patterns are easy to paint, and whether as a 'uniform' for a questing band of knights or with each of them painted in a different manner, it doesn't take much to swap colours around and get a wonderfully diverse range of heroes on the table.

THE BASE: Thick layer of PVA and sand, followed by a thinned-down brown paint from the stationary aisle - literally any middling brown shade will do. Drybrush with Vallejo Dark Sand, then add dots of PVA again and static grass, with some tufts to finish the look.
