Electrotherapy was a medical movement in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries which sought to cure various ailments through the application of high voltage, high frequency electricity. Electrotherapy machines ranged from large, elaborate coils for use in doctors' offices to portable "home batteries" for personal use. While now largely dismissed as quackery, electrotherapy survives in the form of diathermy, TENS, and EMS treatments in physical therapy.
