When media entities allow political agents to dominate crucially essential stories, they do a disservice to their community, their outlet, their readers and themselves. And there is no better focal point for this phenomenon than in the reporting we see around firearms, gun policy, and gun crime in this country.
Case in point: After a tragic mass murder/suicide in Sault Ste. Marie on Monday night made Tuesday morning headlines, by Wednesday, local news coverage had published coverage where over 2/3 of the word count are lobbyists' opinions - opinions that the facts of the case simply don't support, or in many cases, directly oppose.
Content like this does nothing but misinform, mislead, and distract, because just as in the wake of Portapique, the goal of those involved in the immediate aftermath is not to ascertain what absolute litany laws were broken here, and why they were not enforced - but rather to advocate for more laws. Which, it must be said, is an expression of the very definition of the popular axiom; "insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results." If the existing laws were not enforced, what good will more do?
