There are moments in internet history that felt ordinary at the time… but quietly changed everything.
I was invited by YouTube to preview a new exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where the very first YouTube video — Me at the Zoo — and its original 2006 watch page have been preserved as part of the museum’s collection.
What once seemed like a simple clip of a young man commenting on some elephants at the San Diego Zoo is now recognised as a pivotal cultural moment — the beginning of a platform that gave everyday people a stage, reshaped media, and changed how we tell stories.
In this video, I explore the exhibition with Corinna Gardner, curator and design expert at the V&A, and reflect on why something so seemingly small, so deeply ordinary, deserves a place in a museum dedicated to art, design, and performance. As well as the significance of everyday objects throughout history and the hidden beauty of ordinary domestic and urban life.
As someone who has built a home on this platform, standing at its beginning felt both nostalgic and quietly profound.
