I have some big dreams for this year, and to give myself a solid chance of ever reaching them, I want to treat my finances... gently. And January is the perfect time to embrace a little frugality!
So, I’m taking on a 1940s-inspired No Buy January, rooted preparation, and gentle intention rather than punishment or deprivation.
Historically, January was known as the use-up month — a time to make do, mend, and cook from what you already had. Drawing inspiration from the wartime years, I’ll be cooking my way through my pantry, simplifying spending, and consciously stepping away from frictionless consumption in favour of long-term goals and quieter dreams.
In this video, I break down:
What my 1940s-inspired No Buy January actually entails
How I’ve prepared for a low-cost, frugal month
Why this approach feels nurturing rather than restrictive
How pantry cooking and “using up” echoes rationing-era habits
How frugality can be an act of investment in your future, not a denial of joy
For my current Gold Members over on my website: www.realvintagedollshouse.com, I’ve also created a No Buy January toolkit, designed to be downloaded or printed, so you can embark on this journey alongside me. There’s also a private Discord space where members can share updates, photographs, motivation, and reflections throughout the month.
This is not influencer minimalism.
It’s not about aesthetic deprivation or rigid rules.
It’s about living gently, intentionally, and allowing the past to guide us toward a steadier future.
If you’re longing for a slower start to the year, a reset of priorities, and a more mindful relationship with money and consumption, I’d love for you to join me 🤍
