Hard to understand just how loud these trucks really were if you never got to see them in person. They really were that loud from a block away. A couple of straight piped Volvos and one hardly muffled Whitegmc, all running what I can only assume are Volvos diesel engine of that period.

Fun to watch the oldschool hustle as they fly through the neighborhoods, something that was just standard operation in most of SoCal when I was growing up. Seen here with a little leapfrogging early in the morning as the trio was finishing up recycle together before heading off to dump and return for trash.

Both 56 & 59 are essentially identical, running a quicker idle-operated system, while the old Whitegmc was giving it some decent revvs. 52 Sounded great with that pto whine mixed in. Unfortunately, I never did get back out there to film a proper video of that truck.

Funny looking back on it well over a decade later how the residents here seemingly thought nothing of these loud-as-can-be trucks flooring it down the streets in fancy Orange County. Something tells me this wouldn't fly in 2026.
