McLaren is bringing the manual transmission back with the new McLaren McL 6GT, a V8 powered supercar inspired by Bruce McLaren’s original M6GT.
Revealed at Monterey Car Week, the McL 6GT previews a production model planned for 2028 and marks the return of a manual gearbox to McLaren for the first time since the legendary McLaren F1 debuted in 1992.
The new McLaren McL 6GT combines a V8 internal combustion engine with rear wheel drive, hydraulic steering, a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque, and carbon fiber bodywork. Instead of focusing entirely on electronic technology and automated shifting, McLaren is putting mechanical driver involvement at the center of this new supercar.
Its design takes inspiration from Bruce McLaren’s original M6GT project, including a low and wide profile, long roofline, distinctive rear treatment, and several historic details. Inside, digital instrumentation is combined with physical controls, knurled aluminum switchgear, and a traditional manual gear lever.
McLaren says the production version is scheduled for 2028 and will be positioned above the company’s current sports car and supercar range. Final performance specifications and pricing have not been announced, but the car is expected to enter extremely exclusive territory.
