Creating Grass Clumps in Maya
Step 1: Model the Individual Grass Blades
Create a Base Polygon: Go to Mesh Primitives -- Plane. Set the subdivisions to Width: 1, Height: 3 or 4.

Shape the Blade:

Move the vertices to taper the plane from a wide base to a sharp point at the top.

Add a soft curve along the height of the blade using the Soft Select (B) tool or by manually adjusting edge loops so the blade bows outward naturally.

Add Sub-D / Thickness Detail (Optional): Give the blade a slight center ridge by pulling the center vertical edge forward slightly. Keep the polygon count low (around 8–16 triangles per blade).

Step 2: Combine Blades into Clumps
Duplicate and Vary: Duplicate your base blade 5 to 10 times (Ctrl + D). Rotate, scale, and bend them slightly to create variation.

Assemble Clumps:

Group blades into 3 distinct variations:

Small Clump: 3–5 blades for sparse areas or path edges.

Medium/Dense Clump: 8–12 blades radiating outward in a circular pattern for main field coverage.

Tall/Wild Clump: Taller blades mixed with a few wild bent pieces for accent areas around rocks and walls.

Combine Meshes: For each clump variation, select all its individual blades and go to Mesh -- Combine.

Step 3: Setup Pivot Point and Transform
Snap Pivot to Root:

Press D (or hold D + V) to enter pivot edit mode and snap the pivot point to the exact bottom center of the grass clump where it meets the floor.

Center to Grid: Move the grass clump so its pivot sits at the origin (X: 0, Y: 0, Z: 0).

Freeze Transformations: Go to Modify -- Freeze Transformations and Edit -- Delete by Type -- History.
