Walter Wilke, the UP correspondent, stated that there was 75,000 in attendance, but thousands, who were unable to get into the arena, stood outside listening to loudspeakers, which gave an account of the fight.
Before the fight, Ancil Hoffman, the manager of heavyweight champ Max Baer, received an offer of $100,000 to defend against the winner of the bout in Germany, but countered with nothing less than $500,000. The promoter, Walter Rothenberg then upped his offer to $150,000, but Hoffman held fast. He said, "The offers are getting higher, but I wouldn't take Baer to Germany for less than $500,000. They'd probably try to steal the decision from us."
