On June 22, 1937, World Heavyweight Champion James J. Braddock defended his title against the hard-hitting challenger Joe Louis at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
Braddock, whose incredible comeback inspired the film Cinderella Man, entered the ring as the defending champion. Louis, known as "The Brown Bomber," was a heavy favorite despite suffering his first professional defeat just one year earlier against Max Schmeling.
The fight produced an unforgettable opening round when Braddock stunned the crowd by dropping Louis with a perfectly timed right uppercut—the first knockdown of Louis' professional career.
Louis quickly recovered and gradually took complete control of the contest with his devastating jab, body punching, and powerful combinations. Braddock showed tremendous courage, fighting through a badly swollen and bloodied face before Louis ended the fight in dramatic fashion.
At 1:10 of Round 8, Louis landed a crushing left hook to the body followed by a perfectly timed right hand to the chin, knocking Braddock unconscious and becoming the new World Heavyweight Champion.
The victory marked the beginning of one of the greatest championship reigns in boxing history. Joe Louis would hold the heavyweight title for nearly 12 years, making a record 25 successful title defenses.
