Max Richter – 3 Pieces Arranged for Piano Solo
This video features my solo piano interpretations of three works by Max Richter, along with the original source of one of them: the Andantino from Franz Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 959. I decided to re-record these pieces together in a new session, with subtle interpretive variations from previous uploads. They are performed as a continuous sequence, exploring the emotional and historical connections between them.
1) Max Richter – Andante / Reflection (End Title) 00:00
Originally composed for the 2008 animated documentary Waltz with Bashir (dir. Ari Folman), this piece closes the film with quiet intensity. Notably, it is deeply rooted in the Andantino movement from Schubert’s D.959 sonata — reworked by Richter into a minimalist lament.
2) Max Richter – Europe, After the Rain 03:43
From Richter’s debut album Memoryhouse (2002, FatCat/130701), this composition exemplifies his early “documentary music” style. It blends neoclassical lyricism with ambient textures to evoke memory, trauma, and rebirth. The title may reference Max Ernst’s surrealist painting of the same name.
3) Max Richter – Organum 09:57
A sparse, chant-like miniature from The Blue Notebooks (2004), Organum channels the spirit of medieval polyphony through Richter’s modern minimalist lens. It is austere, introspective, and emotionally expansive — and has appeared in Waltz with Bashir, My Brilliant Friend, and other soundtracks.
4) Franz Schubert – Andantino (Sonata in A Major, D.959) 12:52
This piece serves as the emotional foundation for Andante / Reflection. Schubert’s Andantino is deeply expressive — a meditation on melancholy and romantic intensity. Its haunting textures are echoed in Richter’s reinterpretation, bringing the collection full circle.
