Max Payne 2 is one of the best examples of a sequel building off the foundation of its predecessor.
Released in the fall of 2003, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne builds off the foundations of what the first title laid down. It's a wonderful sequel that is a tragic love story between Max Payne and Mona Sax. With remakes set to come out for the first two Max Payne titles, let's take a look at what makes the sequel such a great follow-up.

The first Max Payne was a groundbreaking title at its release, if a bit rough around the edges. Max Payne 2 addresses most of these issues. It takes a different approach to bullet time that helps ease the frustrations present in the first title.
Max Payne 2 makes a tragic love story its main focus as opposed to a tale of revenge. It's a sequel that you can very much argue is superior to the original. To me, they're both neck in neck as far as overall quality.
I ran a poll to see what people preferred of the first two Max Payne titles. At around 2600 total votes, the first game won at 56%, with Max Payne 2 at 44%. However, several comments mentioned they had a hard time choosing between the two.
If you held a gun to my head and asked me if Max Payne 1 or 2 is better, I'd give the very slight edge to the first. But just ever so slight.
With both Max Payne titles getting a remake treatment, something that many including myself found surprising, what better time to revisit this series? Max Payne 2 is an incredible game and always a joy to revisit, and it has been some time since I last did so.
