Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite games to revisit. That said, Silent Hill 2 needs a fair amount of time in between playthroughs. It's not like the better Resident Evils where I can pick one up at any time.
Silent Hill 2 seeps into you, something that needs time to digest. Even with a short runtime, Silent Hill 2 can accomplish so much.
There is a good reason that 20 years on, Silent Hill 2 still hangs heavy over the series and the survival horror genre.
Few games have been dissected, picked apart, and debated as Silent Hill 2 has. And for good reason. Silent Hill 2 is a mostly self-contained story in which the cult and the lore of the series fall into the background. Instead, we go into depth with these characters, with an execution that is unmatched.
Silent Hill 2 is a title where Team Silent had the good knowledge to not try to recreate with future titles. When the development of future titles fell to other studios, Konami pushed for "another Silent Hill 2", but nothing came close.
So let's dig into why 20 years on, Silent Hill 2 has such a fascinating legacy and following in the gaming landscape.
