Maui's Deep Psychological Scars in Moana... | Disney Moana
Maui’s obsession with human approval in Moana seemed to have almost corrupted him by the time he tried to steal the Heart of TeFiti. But other than learning that Maui wanted to be loved by humans, fans never got an outright explanation as to why a demigod would have such a yearning for approval when that typically isn’t the case for deities. However, after rewatching Moana, it looks like the answer was right in front of our faces all along, and there’s a good chance that it all stems from a trauma that was caused by his own parents.
