Inspired by the resilience of his young patients, Dr. Matthew Poppe, MD tends to his own garden of hope, finding solace and inspiration amidst the challenges of cancer. Dr. Poppe is a radiation oncologist and professor at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), where he leads the Proton Center and works to treat cancer in pediatric patients and patients with breast cancer or sarcoma using radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is a form of cancer treatment where particles of energy are used to break cancer cells and shrink tumors. Although he began his career in engineering at NASA, Dr. Poppe made the transition to cancer treatment out of the desire to directly impact and help people. Dr. Poppe discusses the intricacies of radiation treatment and his journey with HCI, along with his passion for gardening and motivation to serve patients.

"Every night when I go home, I realize how lucky I am for my health and that of my kids, but it also puts into perspective that whatever sort of problems I face, they can be overcome. Just as these kids have found ways to overcome their cancer."
