Since the earliest days of the Republic, lawmakers have drawn legislative districts to entrench their party's power — a practice known as gerrymandering, after Elbridge Gerry, the Massachusetts governor who signed a particularly partisan map into law in 1812. Math has made modern gerrymandering more effective than ever before, but now math is being used to fight gerrymandering as well.
