Mastodon are back with Marrow Deep, and this was NOT the album I was expecting.
I discovered Mastodon around 2016, during a period when I was getting back into the metal scene and discovering bands like Opeth, Gojira, and Mastodon. I've been a fan ever since, even if I've sometimes been more of a casual listener. I reviewed Hushed and Grim in 2021 and even ranked the band's entire discography.
So what did I think of Marrow Deep?
Rather than repeating the "Mastodon 2.0" or "best album in years" arguments that are already everywhere, I'm approaching this album from my own perspective—and I was surprised by just how much progressive rock, psychedelic rock, stoner rock, jazz, and classic Mastodon I heard throughout the record.
This is also the first Mastodon album following the passing of founding guitarist Brent Hinds, which adds another important layer to the album for me, especially since I was fortunate enough to see Mastodon perform with Brent when they opened for Iron Maiden.
In this review, I'll go track by track through Marrow Deep and talk about what worked for me, the unexpected influences I heard, the guest appearances, and where I think this album fits into Mastodon's discography.
My favorite tracks: "Moth and Bone," "The Vanishing," and "The Three Fates."
And that score could go up after I spend more time with this album. There is A LOT happening on Marrow Deep, and I think this is one of those records that needs repeated listens before you can fully appreciate everything going on.
If you've listened to Marrow Deep, let me know in the comments: What do you think of the new Mastodon album?
