In 1999, the metal world was changing fast. Nu metal and industrial metal were rising, while many of the thrash bands of the 1980s were trying to figure out where they belonged in this new musical landscape.
For Flotsam and Jetsam, this was a particularly important period. Following another major lineup change, guitarist Mark Simpson and drummer Craig Nielsen were adapting to the band as they began work on Unnatural Selection. Released in 1999, the album found Flotsam and Jetsam balancing the heavier, groove-oriented sound of the decade with a renewed interest in their thrash metal roots.
In this episode of the Flotsam and Jetsam series, we look at the story behind Unnatural Selection, the writing and recording process, the new lineup, key tracks, singles and videos, critical and fan reception, and the album's commercial performance.
And this was only the beginning of another chapter.
