Master Piandao is alegendary swordmaster who quickly became known as one of the most powerful and terrifying non-benders in the Avatar World. He served as the swordmaster to Sokka and actually even Zuko in his early life. But Piandao’s early life was absolutely crazy. Piandao was born to two valiant firebenders deep in the heart of the Fire Nation. Both of whom, were considered prodigies in the art of Firebending. There was one problem however. Piandao was born without any ability to bend. This was deeply embarassing and shameful for the Piandao family, and because of this his parents abandoned him on the doorsteps of a remote and desolate Fire Nation orphanage.
Because of this traumatic and tumultuous upbringing, Piandao was a very nervous and agitated child for many years. His teachers at the orphanage however did soon notice that young Piandao had a deep interest in the arts and enjoyed peaceful painting, and sometimes even caligraphy. These activities helped him to relax and focus his mind, rather than having it dart around thinking of his horrid early life and what his parents had done to him.
As the years marched forward and the young boy hit the age of 10, Piandao attended a Fire Nation military boys' camp. It was here where his innate talent for swordsmanship was discovered. His journey continued in the military, where he refined his skills and developed a vicious and fearsome sword fighting style. Piandao quickly gained a reputation for his prowess on the battlefield, leading the Fire Nation to numerous victories and never lost a single battle.
However, as the years passed and the Hundred Year War raged on, Piandao began to question the Fire Nation's role in the conflict. No longer able to stomach the violence and destruction, he deserted the army and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. He traversed the world, learning vast widsom from benders, warriors, and artisans alike, seeking to become a more enlightened individual.
Eventually, Piandao returned to the Fire Nation and settled in the peaceful town of Shu Jing, the location we meet him in the Last Airbender series. But the master’s past soon caught up with him, as the Fire Army came to arrest him for desertion. In a legendary battle however, Piandao single-handedly defeated all one hundred soldiers who were sent to arrest him, a testament to his remarkable skill. From that moment on, the Fire Army never dared to cross him again.
Word of Piandao's extraordinary talents spread far and wide, and aspiring swordsmen sought his tutelage. Yet, he became known for turning many of them away, seeking only those with the humility to learn. Among the few he accepted was Prince Zuko, whom he trained in the art of wielding dual broadswords and of course Sokka…
