MASCOT has re-entered JET for the first time in nearly a decade. Since MASCOT last provided a close-up view of JET’s first wall UK Atomic Energy Authority and EUROfusion have undertaken two high-powered deuterium-tritium campaigns, and the first work package to be undertaken will be a high-definition photographic survey of the tokamak interior to identify and record the impact of the thousands of plasma pulses over the last few years.
Attention then turns to subsequent projects, namely Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) - being performed as a collaboration with our EUROfusion partners - which will measure the absorption of tritium and other elements into tiles and components, and the Sample Retrieval campaign, which will remove approx. 60 tiles and components for further analysis both at Culham Campus and at EUROfusion facilities. This analysis will then both inform the development of the JET Decommissioning and Repurposing (JDR) programme workflow, and provide insight into suitable materials to be used in the first walls of future fusion machines.
More details about these projects will be published in due course.
The TCTF and Octant 5 boom enclosures will be returned to J1A later in the year ahead of further system and hardware upgrades in preparation for large scale decommissioning of the JET vessel’s internal components.
