This video shows how to mark and erase lines on top finished upholstery leathers when necessary. These leathers could be used for automotive purposes and furniture too.
Top finished leathers are called this way because they have a protection on their top surface. A layer of transparent sealer or lacquer (2 to 3 coats) is sprayed over the surface to add a protection against UV sun rays, the users daily traffic, air conditioner, humidity, dust, grease, goo, dirt, etc.
I consider the marking process on leather material or vinyl as of great importance. As we can see in the video different items are used for the marking procedure. Regularly the marking process is done on the right side of the leather material. It also could be done on the reverse side. In this case regular pens are also useful.
I show two liquids to erase most of these markings. The first i show is a solvent based liquid called washer. It is used a lot in the shoemaking industry. I do not know the composition. It seems like a kind of benzine...I do not really know. The second liquid I consider very useful and much easier to find is the white or mineral spirits. It is also called white gasoline. It works out fine for top finished upholstery leathers, vinyls and some fabrics.
Anyways, before using these cleaning liquids do a test on an inconspicuous area to be sure if it fulfills the purpose without causing damage to our upholstery material. Some automotive leathers have a hard lacquer on top very difficult to remove or alter, so thinner can do a good job too if erroneously marked with a regular pen.
In a next video we will show how to mark and erase those lines on unfinished leathers (aniline leathers), semi finished leathers (semi aniline leathers) and pull-up vintage leathers.
