In Luke 14:26 Jesus says, "If any man comes to me, and hates not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." These are hard words. Who can hate his own father and mother? What did Jesus mean when he uttered these words? Do we really need to hate our father? Well, in a certain sense, we do.
