I finally finished this dang run! For me, DK has been by FAR the most difficult captain to finish a run with. So many stars have to align for you to be able to crush Bowser and walk away with that excellent time... in this run I got MOST of them, and finished in under an hour and a half. Not bad at all, considering that I had been attempting this category for four days straight. This was a little under two minutes behind WR at the time of play, more than good enough for me to justify moving on to my last remaining undone captain- Bowser.
What went well:
5 game finish- 5 being the minimum number of required games.
Played only one Wall Ball- the Toads were nice enough to let me fully beat them, not just tie them, meaning that a second minigame was not necessary.
Overall good play and goal prioritization- Diddy MVP in Peach stands out as a close shave, but one that made the final match significantly better.
Diddy's three targeted missions were all first try- DK's I got JUST in time (but it also happened to be the Banana Slamma, so hey, not bad!)
My SUCCESSFUL Bowser game crushed Bowser into dust and finished with a Mercy Rule in the 3rd inning.
What went wrong:
The biggest problems were not having Diddy's Clamber and Paragoomba's Long Hit and 3 RBI missions going into Bowser. I had been trying to get them done literally all game, but they unfortunately dragged me down...
...leading to me having three false-start matches against Bowser, in which I failed to get an RBI for Paragoomba in the 1st inning and gave up the match to try again. I just, I can't count on Paragoomba getting RBIs throughout the match, I felt that I HAD to start with at least 1. And then on my fourth try, I did get 1.
Completely unnecessary Bowser Jr. fight on the overworld- he was just blocking my path, and I got caught...
Lost about 30 seconds overall to futzing with my computer, closing my door, and being distracted about which missions I had completed.
What was alright but could have gone better:
I did get a Clamber in my first game (Wario) but at the very very end of the 5th inning of a tied game, requiring me to play an extra 6th inning in order to secure the win (which I did). Ideally I would have gotten that Clamber earlier...
More Mercy Rules definitely would have helped, notably in Mario and Yoshi.
I will return to fight for this record at some point. I'll find that day where the stars align. :)
