Kierio04 | Mario Kart Wii - Koopa Cape Backwards in ONE Respawn @Kierio04 | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 1 hour ago
Huge props to @Jellopuff_TAS for achieving DK mountain backwards under an hour before I attempted and achieved this. Make sure to watch it here: youtu.be/LpL2Sbehj1M

In this video, I drive a full lap of the Koopa Cape backwards with the 3 mushrooms available in time trials. However, because this doesn't require all 3 mushrooms, I don't use them all. As is the same in my CTGP backwards series, in order for a track to count as being completed backwards, you must start in lap 1 and travel through all of lap 0 backwards, finishing by reaching lap -1. For the record, this is a TAS.

With @Estaloy's first "Backwards Compilation" in 2018 (youtu.be/R8xbk0e95r8), there were 3 tracks left that couldn't be done backwards (KC, MT, rDKM), and an additional 2 (DKS, GV) that required respawns. Around this time people didn't care much about minimising mushroom usage, so that was never the focus. Getting track completion without respawns was the final goal. Jellopuff solved GV 0 respawns in March 2019, I solved MT (0 respawns with help from Charlie) in December 2020, and then Jellopuff and I solved rDKM and KC respectively an hour apart in early May 2022. Today, every single track in the game can now be completed backwards, with only 3 tracks requiring a single respawn each (DKS, KC, and rDKM).

Here, there is ONE respawn that is mandatory to complete the track backwards, and there is ONE section requiring two mushrooms.

There are 2 blocks on Koopa Cape:
1. Getting out of the pipe
2. Getting up to the first ramp

After Jellopuff performed DKM backwards, I realised there was only one track left, Koopa Cape. Out of nowhere, I had the idea to use a wallclip I remembered seeing in TAFs (notably one of @CHARL1E's TAF Compilations - youtu.be/_sfGJoTsT2U?t=103) to hit KCP5 and respawn before the pipe section. I tested the idea out and got it to work in under 20 minutes (youtu.be/GYr7wuRwv0E). This respawn put me much further back than I expected, so I had to drive forward to hit KCP4, and then continue driving backwards again.

When I reached the first ramp, I couldn't just use Blaze's 2 shroom ejection from 2019 (youtu.be/HLKHCGKYVU4) or Monster's 1 shroom ejection from 2020 (youtu.be/tBRctREEEIM) to land back without respawning, since I exhausted my 3rd mushroom by respawning. Instead I tried to get a 0 shroom ejection cf had demonstrated in 2021 (youtu.be/FBzaFS2Zgio) to land back without respawning. I severely underestimated the difficulty of getting a good ejection and so opted to just respawn (youtu.be/tOFsnA-_0g0) in order to confirm the track possible backwards as a whole. After respawning; myself, Charlie, Loki, and Tonkao were able to see the glory of negative race completion signifying me entering lap -1 upon driving over the finish line.

Even after being the last person to be the first person to complete a track backwards, I wasn't too happy with doing a double turnaround in order to get RFH from the ramp, so attempted getting the ejection with the old ultra setup, just coming from a different angle (youtu.be/1SigI0FV7Kw). This was extremely difficult, tedious, and time consuming to get working, so even though it was already known to be possible to land back shroomless.

When I got around to recording, I decided to have another attempt at cf's ejection since I might as well spend some time trying to get it while I waited for Jellopuff to record DKM. I got a close attempt after 5 hours, then sent it off to the CTGP backwards team to take a look at it and went to bed. this is police (youtube.com/channel/UC3f4F6RX4gBHOGxG6owYigg) responded overnight with not only the SG wall bonk ejection onto the wooden ramp (0:46) but also the successful ejection landing back without even wallclipping (youtu.be/pRvIryVFnWQ). The strat being complete, I then worked on a celebratory TAF, which is a throwback to my very first TAF that I made over 4 years ago (youtu.be/WFuqnjlQuvs).

In summary, Koopa Cape has the following statistics to offer:
Minimum Respawns for Infinite Mushrooms: 1
Minimum Respawns for 3, 2, 1, 0 Mushrooms: 1, 1, N/A, N/A
Minimum Mushrooms for Minimum Respawns: 2
Minimum Mushrooms for Track Completion: 2

Special thanks to Melg (youtube.com/channel/UCi7BmIG91AG7lBt3sC_PkGw), for creating this updated TAS debug panel, which includes an added value for respawn points, labelled "RP".

Also, thanks again to this is police for TASing everything from 0:45 to 1:02

Lastly, for everyone who has read this far, if I ever get to 4000 subscribers (which, considering my upload schedule nowadays, seems unlikely), I will make a summary video of the entire Backwards Challenge covering all workarounds and strategies for every track.
