Marek Weber (1888 - 1964) was a major recording artist, violinist and orchestra leader. He was born in Lemberg, Galicia, Austria-Hungary (now Lviv, Ukraine) and came to Berlin in 1906 to study music at the Stern Conservatory. Shortly after he formed his own orchestra which performed at various cafes and hotels in Germany. His early recordings covered many styles from waltzes, tangos and jazz. In 1933 he left Germany as a Jew, first to London where he recorded for the HMV and Decca record companies. In 1937 Weber relocated to the United States where he remained for the rest of his life. During 1938-39, he was the conductor for the "Contented Hour" radio show (sponsored by Carnation Brand Condensed Milk) and he became known as the "Radio Waltz King." For many years he was director of a sixteen piece orchestra in Chicago at the Stevens Hotel (now Conrad Hilton Hotel.) He became a US citizen in 1942 and retired to a farm he purchased in Wisconsin. During the 1940s he recorded a series of classical and light opera recordings for the Columbia Record Company.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky had already won considerable success with his 1869 setting of Lev Mey's version of 'Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt', the Harper's Song from from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, known in English as 'None but the Lonely Heart', published as Op. 6, No. 6, a song with which it cannot easily stand comparison. It was dedicated to Maria Kamenskaya, a young singer just out of the Petersburg Conservatory who had performed this song in a concert. The song was premiered by Russian mezzo-soprano Yelizaveta Lavrovskaya in Moscow in 1870.

English lyrics:

None but the lonely heart
Can know my sadness
Alone and parted
Far from joy and gladness
Heaven's boundless arch I see
Spread out above me
Oh, what a distance drear to one
Who loves me
None but the lonely heart
Can know my sadness
Alone and parted
Far from joy and gladness
Alone and parted far
From joy and gladness
My senses fail
A burning fire
Devours me
None but the lonely heart
Can know my sadness
