Welcome to the channel! In this video, I test the Marconi Scimitar H, a classic military HF radio, using a 16-meter random wire antenna mounted on the rooftop—on a rainy day, right in front of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.

The Scimitar H is a rugged, reliable HF transceiver designed for military and government use. It covers frequencies from 1.6 to 30 MHz, providing USB, LSB, AM, and CW modes. Built to withstand harsh environments, it offers high sensitivity and selectivity, making it a solid choice for long-distance HF communications.

The Antenna Setup – 16m Random Wire

For this test, I’m using a 16-meter (52 ft) long random wire antenna. The wire is simply strung up on the rooftop, taking advantage of the natural elevation and the proximity to the sea, which enhances signal propagation.

Why Use a Random Wire Antenna?
• Wide Frequency Coverage – A properly tuned random wire can work across multiple HF bands.
• Simple & Effective – No complex installation required; just a long wire and a good ground.
• Portable & Adaptable – Ideal for temporary setups or field operations.
• Propagation Benefits – Near the sea, the saltwater surface enhances low-angle radiation, improving DX performance.

Performance in Rainy Conditions

Operating in the rain presents challenges, such as increased noise and potential detuning, but also enhanced conductivity, which can sometimes improve reception. In this video, we’ll see how well the Scimitar H handles these conditions.
