The SGC SG-2020 is a rugged portable HF transceiver developed in the late 1980s–early 1990s, designed for field and emergency communications. It covers the HF bands and delivers around 20 watts PEP, making it ideal for QRP and portable operation. Its durability and simplicity have made it a favorite among radio enthusiasts, with a strong community sharing knowledge—especially in the SG-2020 Facebook group.
In this video, I show some of the improvements I’ve made to my unit to enhance reliability and performance:
Overvoltage protection to prevent damage from power spikes
Added fuse for extra safety
Improved thermal dissipation with thermal paste on RF transistors
Better receive audio following the DG2IAQ modification
These upgrades keep the original spirit of the radio while making it more robust and enjoyable to use today.
