VIDEO INFO: For the relatively uninitiated (myself included), this an informative and revealing BBC Television documentary from 2017 about an enigmatic star, who despite his iconic status has remained slightly mysterious and maybe his loss slightly overshadowed by what must have been a bewildering decade of competing premature rock fatalities (he died exactly a month after Elvis). I always felt his image, which I encountered primarily through the prism of a handful of hits performed on ‘Top Of The pops’ type output, seemed slightly lightweight - as close to David Essex as David Bowie. However, this programme unveils a far more driven, complex and accomplished musician and lyricist than I had expected. Including a range of contributions from notable contemporaries such as 'Whispering' Bob Harris, producer Tony Visconti and Toyah Willcox; the narrative is constructed from extracts of his own diary read aloud by an actor, which risks being a slightly unfair technique because like many diaries, it may well not have been intended for broadcast and vague sentiments can be given artificial weight when taken out of context. It portrays a man with a consistent, conceited vanity; but that could perhaps be said of the majority of young men before reaching their 30s (he was only 29 years old when he died as the passenger of an Austin Mini in a slightly suburban but no less tragic car accident) and certainly most creative types.
